Gear Review: Yurbuds IronMan Series Performance Earphones

Yurbuds in Canyonlands National Park
Whether I am hiking, running or backpacking, having music with a beat to keep the pace moving has always been a big help. The problem is that I either can’t hear what is going on in my surroundings, or the earbuds I am using create pressure points in my ears not to mention in the summer I sweat onto my earbuds. This is where Yurbuds come in handy. Yurbuds are a covering that can slip onto earbuds to create a better, more comfortable fit in the ear without blocking out ambient sound and are sweat resistant. Yurbuds makes an IronMan version of Yurbuds with Yurphones that come in a red and black color.

Yurbuds are a soft, flexible rubber slip cover for earbuds. They are sweat resistant as well as removable and washable. The Yurbuds are custom sized to the user’s ear making for a pressure free fitting. They fit into the ear and are gently twisted into place to lock them into the correct position preventing them from falling out while exercising. Yurbuds also makes Yurphones that are designed to work with the Yurbuds. I have been using the IronMan version of Yurbuds earphones. The Ironman Yurphones are red with black earbuds and red Yurbud covers.

Yurbuds come in different sizes and it is really important to get the correct sized Yurbuds. There are a couple of different ways to get sized for Yurbuds. Either going to a retailer who sells Yurbuds and has a sizing kit or taking a photo of your ear with either a quarter held up for reference or wearing iPod earbuds. The Yurbuds website has examples of what makes a good picture they can measure from, but basically the picture must be a direct shot into the ear, with no hair in the way and something for reference (either a quarter or iPod buds). Once the correct size in obtained it is a matter of placing the Yurbuds on existing earbuds or getting Yurphones to go with them.

The Yurbuds are easy to place on earphones. I have had to take my Yurbuds off several times as it is easier to clean them when they are off the earbuds. To place the Yurbuds on the earphones, it is best to hold the earphone as it would sit in the ear (with the stem down). For the right ear, the conical shaped insert goes towards the front of the head with the flatter part towards the back of the head.

To wear earbuds with Yurbuds on takes a little getting used to the first couple of times wearing them. I find that if I place the conical portion of the Yurbud into my ear with the stem of the earbud pointing down and back, I can then twist the stem down locking the Yurbud into my ear comfortably in place. Once in the ear, they are super comfortable and I can barely feel that I am wearing anything at all. The first time I actually put them in upside down and it felt funny letting me know I had them in wrong. I do find that sometimes the conical part that inserts into my ear will tickle the inside of my ear. I just press on the Yurbud and it relieves the tickle sensation.

The Yurbuds have been great for running and hiking. I don’t have to worry about sweat affecting my earbuds sound quality or lifespan. I can still hear ambient noise around me and in fact I don’t have to have the music set as loud as I used to with my old earbuds. The Yurbuds have yet to fall out of my ears even when I have had my MP3 player fall out of my pocket. There are no pressure points that form as I wear the Yurbuds which is what makes me very happy. And while I am not an audiophile, I find that the quality of the sound is great and clear.

I have been using the Yurbuds while running. I have been running about three times a week depending on weather. The Yurbuds stay in my ears and haven’t caused any pressure points. The cord is plenty long enough for me to wear the Yurbuds and have the MP3 player in my shorts pocket and still have a little length left over.

Yurbuds in the Wasatch Mountains
I find that the Yurbuds do seem to attract dirt to their surface. The rubber is a soft rubber that seems just slightly sticky. I find that even when my ears are clean, they tend to pick up a little ear wax from my ears. I have carried the Yurbuds in my pocket and purse and the Yurbuds will sometimes pick up lint or crumbs. Sometimes the dirt will brush off the Yurbuds easily and other times I have had to wipe it down with the corner of my shirt until I can get home to clean them in the sink. Although they seem to pick up dirt easily, they are super easy to clean so it hasn’t been a problem.

I never thought it was possible to find earbuds that could be so comfortable. I have now permanently added Yurbuds to my outdoor exercise gear due to their comfort, sound quality, and ability to allow ambient noise in.
