Gear Review: Camelbak Groove

I hate tap water. Almost every place I have ever lived has had terrible tap water. Maybe I am sensitive to the taste of chlorine in my water, but I have had to resort to filtering my water. I was really happy to get a Groove personal filter bottle as this meant I could fill up at any tap and not worry about the taste of the water.

Bite valve stowed
The New Groove Bottle is a portable filtration system developed by Camelbak to encourage hydration on the go from tap water. The Groove is like the Better Bottle, but comes with a filter in-line within the straw. The carbon filter is made from coconut carbon and should last for two months or 200 refills. The bottle is a BPA-free plastic and has a 0.6 L capacity. The bite valve is retractable, lying in a slot to present a low profile. At the top of the bottle is a loop for attaching the bottle with a carabiner or other device.

Bite valve deployed
So far I have been really enjoying the Camalbak Groove. It filters out the unpleasant taste of tap water. It works well whether the water is warm or cold. Warm water tends to have more unpleasant flavors than cold water so being able to produce clean tasting water while warm is a plus for me. The bottle is a good diameter, easy to hold in my hand. The retractable bite valve is easy to work single-handed. The bite valve has a bump at the base for the thumb making it easy to grab the recessed bite valve and deploy it.

Filter and straw assembly
The filter is easy to remove. The straw comes off with a quarter turn and the filter fits inside the top of the straw. The straw does take up a little volume in the bottle, but as long as I don’t fill the bottle past the 0.6 L volume marking, the bottle doesn’t overflow when I screw on the lid with the straw. The bite valve is comfortable to use and has a good flow rate. The flow is slightly impaired with the filter but I find I don’t have to suck too hard in order to get a good flow.

Straw with filter in place
I’ve been using the Groove as a backup hydration bottle on day hikes. The bottle fits quite nicely in the side bottle pocket of my daypack. It is easy to fill up and keep in the fridge ready to go when I am. It encourages me to drink water because I know the water will not taste like chlorinated tap water. The bite valve is comfortable to use and the flow rate is fast enough to satisfy my thirst. I really like that the bottle doesn’t spill or leak when in use. Whether the bite valve is deployed or not, the bottle will not leak. Due to space constraints, I have been laying the bottle down in the fridge without any worries about leaks. The Groove also doesn’t leak around the threads and doesn’t require tipping the bottle to drink from it.

The Groove bottle has been a great filter for removing the unpleasant taste from my tap water. It is easy to use and works very well with warm to cold water. I have been very happy with the Groove Personal Filter.
